1 Ball of Sewing Yarn

Before You Begin
- Set up your work area first on a clean, flat surface.
- Lay out everything in the kit so it's all within reach before you begin.
- You will also need a pair of scissors, which is not included in the kit.
- Adult supervision is recommended.
- The kit contains small parts and a sharp crochet needle, so handle the tools carefully.
- Keep the pompom yarn, plastic mesh grid, crochet hook, sewing yarn, needle, D-shaped rings, clasp, pearl handle, and chain strap organized as you work.
Step 1: Prepare the Pompom Yarn
- Take the end of the pompom yarn.
- Cut off the final pompom so you have a loose piece of yarn at the end.
- Start with the largest rectangular section of the plastic mesh, leaving the two side flaps for later.
- Push the loose yarn end through a corner square of the mesh.
- Tie the yarn securely around the edge with a simple knot.
Step 2: Make the Outer Pompom Border
- Count to the 4th hole along the edge of the mesh.
- Push the metal crochet hook up through that hole.
- Use the hook to grab the pompom yarn.
- Pull the yarn down through the mesh.
- Pull the yarn through the loop you created to lock it in place.
- Pull it tight so the pompoms sit securely against the mesh.
- Count another 4 squares and repeat.
- Continue looping the yarn every 4 squares along the edge.
- When you reach a corner, turn the corner and continue using the same pattern.
- Keep going until the entire outer edge of the large rectangle is covered
Step 3: Fill the Center of the Purse
- Start a new row next to the finished outer row.
- Begin each new row 3 squares over from the previous row.
- Along each row, create a pompom loop every 4 squares.
- Continue down the row until you get as close as possible to the outer border without looping into it.
- Count 3 squares across and begin the next row in the opposite direction.
- Continue working back and forth until the center section is completely covered with pompoms.
- When finished, tie the end of the pompom yarn around the mesh to secure it.
- If the yarn is too short to tie, pull the final two loops through and use some sewing yarn to tie them together securely.
- Cut the remaining yarn beside the final pompom.
Step 4: Attach the Handle Rings
- Attach the D-shaped handle rings before covering the side flaps with pompoms.
- Thread the sewing yarn through the needle.
- Position one D-shaped ring on each side flap.
- Place each ring about 2 squares from the outside edge of the bag and center it on the flap.
- Sew each ring onto the mesh with a few stitches.
- Tie a knot in the yarn to secure each ring.
Step 5: Cover the Side Flaps with Pompoms
- Tie the pompom yarn onto one corner of a side flap.
- Work around the outside edge of the flap using the same looping method as before.
- Count every 4 squares as you create each pompom loop.
- After covering the perimeter, add one row of pompoms down the center of the flap.
- Make sure you do not cover the D-shaped handle ring with a pompom.
- Secure the yarn when the flap is finished.
- Repeat the same process on the second side flap.
Step 6: Sew the Purse Together
- Cut a long piece of sewing yarn.
- Thread it through the eye of the needle.
- Line up one side flap with the main body of the purse.
- Push the needle through the top two matching mesh squares to join the pieces together.
- Tie a knot to secure the starting point.
- Sew down the side by passing the needle through matching squares on both pieces of mesh.
- Pull the yarn tight as you work so the stitches disappear underneath the pompoms.
- Tie a knot when you reach the end.
- Repeat the sewing process until the purse is fully joined together.
- Leave the top of the purse open.
Step 7: Attach the Closing Clasp
- Position one side of the metal clasp inside the purse flap.
- Place the other half of the clasp on the opposite side.
- Check that both pieces line up correctly when the purse is closed.
- Secure the clasp by opening the two side anchors behind the mesh.
- Ask an adult for help if this part is difficult.
Step 8: Add the Handle and Strap
- Find the metal loops you attached earlier.
- Hook the crossbody chain strap onto the metal loops.
- Attach the artificial pearl handle to the same loops.
- Make sure both sides are securely connected.
- Your pompom purse is now ready to wear and show off.
