Eraser Lab Craft Kit
Before You Begin
- Set up your work area first. Lay down paper towels or another protective covering to catch any mess.
- Lay out everything in the kit so it's all within reach before you begin.
- Cover your work surface with parchment paper, a plastic mat, or an old tray because the clay can stain or damage carpets, clothing, and porous surfaces.
- Ask an adult to preheat the oven to 110 to 130°C (230 to 265°F).
- Always ask an adult for help when using the oven.
- Never microwave the clay.
- Do not bake the erasers for more than 20 minutes.
- Wash your hands after making your erasers.
- Store any leftover clay in a plastic bag or container with a lid.
Step 1: Soften the Clay
- Choose the clay colors you want to use.
- Warm the clay in your hands until it feels soft and easy to shape.
- If the clay feels stiff or crumbly, continue kneading it until it softens.
- Mix different clay colors together if you want to create your own colors and designs.
Step 2: Create Your Eraser
- Shape the softened clay into your own eraser creation.
- Use the included mold if you want help creating a shape.
- You can place more than one clay color into the same mold.
- You can also use a molded shape as part of a larger eraser by adding a base or building more clay around it.
- Continue shaping and adding details until you are happy with your design.
Step 3: Prepare the Mold
- If you are using the mold, fill the included spray bottle with water.
- Lightly spray the inside of the mold with water before adding or removing your clay creation.
- This helps make the eraser easier to remove from the mold.
Step 4: Remove the Eraser from the Mold
- Take the finished clay eraser out of the mold before baking.
- Slowly bend the mold to gently release the eraser.
- Be careful not to damage the shape while removing it.
- Do not put the mold in the oven.
Step 5: Get Ready to Bake
- Place your finished clay erasers on a baking tray.
- Make sure the erasers are completely removed from the mold.
- Ask an adult to place the tray into the preheated oven.
Step 6: Bake Your Erasers
- Bake the erasers at 110 to 130°C (230 to 265°F).
- Bake most erasers for 15 minutes or less.
- Smaller or thinner erasers may need a little less time.
- Larger erasers may bake for up to 20 minutes.
- Never bake them for longer than 20 minutes.
- Keep an eye on the erasers while they bake because oven temperatures can vary.
Step 7: Cool Your Erasers
- Have an adult carefully remove the baking tray from the oven.
- Leave the erasers on the tray until they are completely cool.
- Do not handle or use the erasers while they are still hot.
- Once completely cool, your handmade erasers are ready to use.
Care and Storage
- Clean up any clay residue from your work area right away.
- Store unused clay in a sealed plastic bag or container with a lid.
- Once baked, avoid leaving the finished erasers on plastic, painted, or laminated surfaces for long periods.
