FREE Printables: Back-to-school Sheets "Tips for Managing Back to School Stress "

Back to school can bring on a combination of stress and excitement for families, but like so many other events in 2020, this year may bring more anxiety than usual for many of us.

Whether you are choosing to homeschool for the first time, pursuing distance learning, or sending your kids back to school equipped with masks and hand sanitizer in addition to their usual pencils, crayons, and new backpacks – this year is decidedly different.

And with any amount of different, a fair amount of stress comes with it... especially when that different is as a result of a global pandemic.

This stress doesn’t begin and end with the adults though. Kids are feeling it, too!

Thankfully, there are plenty of things that we as adults - can do to help our kiddos feel more secure, prepared, and even excited about beginning school in fall of 2020.

🍎 This may seem counterintuitive, but one way to deal with the anxiety of back to school is to name it, talk about it, and address it head on. If your child says they are worried, get specific about what they are worried about and give them the words & tools they need to process that. Knowing the details and kid-appropriate reasons for them can make things seem less scary.

🍎 Plan a memorable way to mark the first day even if it looks different. Digital school doesn’t mean you can’t still get a new outfit (even if it’s a cute new set of pj’s!) or a fun new water bottle. Wearing a mask doesn’t mean you can’t still take those smiley first day photos. Different doesn’t mean traditions can’t be adapted and still followed!

🍎 Get back in a routine! If this summer have been a time without regular bedtimes, mealtimes, etc., getting back in that rhythm will help everyone’s stress levels.

🍎 Make space for fun and silliness! You may be constantly worried, but that doesn’t mean your child is thinking about their worries 24/7 as well. Give them time and opportunities to talk to you, but also show them how much fun you can still have despite this scary time. Plus, you might just enjoy (and need) some silly time, too!
